Drew is a phenomenal artist. Of the 3 artists mentioned in this blog, he is the only one still with us, and thank god for that. This man should be making every single movie poster that is released. Check out his stuff at www.drewstruzan.com

John Alvin

John passed away in 2008, from a heart attack. He was one of the greats, he was always able to whittle the image away and find what was iconic about it. He could tell you the movie's story with one single image. The Aladdin poster is my favorite of his. That single image tells you all you need to know about the movie...it's magic. They had prints of the Jack Sparrow pieces on sale at the Art Of Disney store in Disney World, I am kicking myself for not buying one. Check out more of his stuff at www.johnavlinart.com

Bob Peak

Bob's stuff is very surreal. I love all of the light refractions in his stuff, it's like we're seeing it after is has been broken up by a prism. Just like John, Bob always managed to find what was iconic about the movie, and turn it into fantastical art. Bob also did covers for Time magazine, and several other publications. Movie posters today are terrible, I look at hundreds of them every year. None of them compare to the hand crafted art I grew up with. Thank God Drew Struzan is still around, though you won't see much of his work at your multiplex. Film companies seem perfectly content to slap together a piece in photoshop with Zac Efron's face taking up most of the image so that we know for sure he's in the movie. I lament the dying art form of the hand painted movie poster. Maybe someday I'll have a sweet poster up on display outside a multiplex...

Some of my work

Here is some of the work that I had handy on my computer. I will be taking pictures of a lot more of my stuff next month. Most of this stuff I'm not terribly fond of, but felt I should post em anyway.

This started off as a quick sketch, but it wasn't looking all that great. I threw it in photoshop and touched it up.
Of all the pieces in this post, this one is my fav. I had blast designing this cereal box. It is inspired by everything retro 50's and Atomic age. My other design idea was for Crack Rocks...that one didn't get too far.
Lord Of The Rings watercolor...it needs some work.
I tried my hand at fantasy art, and failed.

Foist post!

Welcome one and all to the first blog of my life!

In the near future I will be posting pictures of my art. Feel free to tear it apart, or shower me with praise. I will also be talking about art that I enjoy, and some that I don't.

With this blog I would lke to talk about life after art school...and how hard it is. I did very well in college, I graduated with honors and was well liked by my teachers. However, I didn't always listen when they talked about how hard making it in the art world was. Take it from a graduate, listen to your teachers! Build a website early on, start a blog (it took me a year to start this one). Go listen to every guest speaker that comes to visit, especially if they are talking about how to get a job in the industry. It is incredibly difficult to find any decent job right now, let alone one in the art field. For God's sake go and intern somewhere! I wish I could have done this. Be prepared to freelance, I didn't think I would have to and boy was I wrong! As I stated earlier, I did very well in school, I learned a lot and grew as an artist. I just didn't do the work to prepare myself for what came after, and believe me what comes after is an asskicking!
